How to Block a Lost or Stolen Phone in India

Losing a phone can feel overwhelming, especially because it carries your SIM, banking apps, personal photos, and access to important accounts. In India, the good news is you can act quickly to reduce the risk of misuse and even block the handset from being used on mobile networks. The following sections walk you through what to do immediately and how to block a lost or stolen phone using official tools like CEIR and your IMEI.

What to Do First After Your Phone Goes Missing

Start by confirming whether the phone is truly missing or just misplaced. Call your number from another phone, check common spots, and ask friends, family, or nearby shops if they found it. If you have “Find My Device” (Android) or “Find My” (iPhone) enabled, use it to locate the phone, play a sound, or mark it as lost. Avoid going alone to an unknown location—your safety matters more than the device.

Next, secure your accounts and reduce immediate damage. Lock the phone remotely if possible, log out of important apps, and change passwords for your email and banking-related accounts (email first, because it can reset other passwords). If your SIM is active, contact your mobile operator’s customer care to block the SIM and request a replacement SIM. This step prevents OTP-based fraud and calls or SMS misuse.

Then, file a police complaint/FIR (or an online complaint where available) because it helps with insurance claims, SIM replacement, and CEIR blocking. Keep copies/screenshots of the complaint number and details. Also gather basic information you’ll need for the next steps: phone brand/model, color, purchase invoice (if available), mobile number, last known location/time, and most importantly the IMEI number (usually printed on the box/invoice, or available in old device settings if synced).

Block Your Phone in India Using CEIR and IMEI

CEIR (Central Equipment Identity Register) is the Government of India’s system that helps block lost or stolen phones by using the device’s IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number. Once blocked, the handset is prevented from working on Indian telecom networks, which discourages resale and limits misuse. To use CEIR, you typically need your IMEI (for dual-SIM phones, there are usually two IMEIs), your mobile number, and a copy of the police complaint/FIR.

To submit a blocking request, visit the CEIR portal and choose the option for blocking a lost/stolen mobile. Fill in the required details carefully—name, contact info, address, device brand/model, IMEI(s), and the police complaint information. Upload the supporting documents (complaint/FIR copy and identity proof as requested). After submitting, you’ll receive a request or reference number—save it, because you’ll need it to check status or to unblock later if the phone is recovered.

After you place the request, monitor the status on the portal using your reference number. Blocking may take some time to reflect across networks, so keep your SIM blocked and continue securing accounts in the meantime. If you recover your phone later, CEIR also allows you to request unblocking using the same reference number and relevant proof. Remember: CEIR blocks the device from telecom usage, but it doesn’t automatically retrieve your phone—combine it with police follow-up and location tools for the best results.

Acting fast is the key to handling a lost or stolen phone in India. Secure your accounts, block your SIM, and file a police complaint first, then use CEIR with your IMEI to block the handset on mobile networks. Keep all reference numbers and copies of documents safely, because they help with tracking progress and unblocking if your phone is found. With the right steps, you can limit damage and improve your chances of recovery.
